Senators File Bill to Cut Access Missouri Awards - Take Action Today!
They're at it again! Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia and Sen. David Pearce, R-Warrensburg, filed Senate Bill 784 today to drastically reduce Access Missouri financial aid awards for Missouri students who attend independent colleges and universities in our state. You might recall that they co-sponsored a similar bill in the 2009 Legislative session.
Senate Bill 784 is equally dangerous. Once again, they are proposing to cap the maximum amount awarded to eligible students attending four-year institutions at $2,850 per year.
This proposal would compound the financial burden of thousands of students from working and lower-income families who attend independent institutions by reducing their maximum state financial aid by $1,750 per year. At the same time, SB 784 would increase maximum awards for students attending four-year public institutions by $700 per year. IT'S NOT FAIR, AND WE CAN'T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN!
Access Missouri recipients have already seen their awards cut. Due to the extreme revenue shortfall in the state, the State Budget Director has notified Missouri Department of Higher Education officials that award amounts will remain at the current level of 78 percent of the statutory maximums again this semester.
We remain committed to protecting this important financial aid program against any legislative attacks. We need your help because we can't do it alone!
TAKE ACTION TODAY! Contact your state legislators and tell them that you OPPOSE Senate Bill 784. Let them know that you live in their district and you believe Access Missouri is working for Missouri's working families and should remain intact.
If you get a response, let us know by e-mailing info@keepmeincollege.org.
TELL OTHERS ABOUT OUR COALITION! We must continue to present a strong and unified front to ensure that Access Missouri remains protected. Encourage your family and friends to join our Coalition. More information is available on our Web site at www.keepmeincollege.org
Meanwhile, we'll keep you posted!
